Non-smartcard authenticator/login

Modified on Tue, 15 Oct, 2024 at 4:33 PM

The ICB recommends smartcard users (especially sponsors and smartcard unlockers) have an alternative login authenticator to access NHS Care Identity Management (CIM), and other compatible sites/software. This means you can access some services when your smartcard cannot be used.

The following are scenarios where having an alternative authenticator will allow you to continue accessing compatible sites/services:

  1. Smartcard faulty/lost/temporarily inaccessible
  2. Smartcard software error
  3. HSCN/VPN connection issue

Setup a non-smartcard authenticator

We recommend adding NHS Care Identity to the Microsoft Authenticator app. Nearly all ICB staff have this app for their SNEE account and it is also the recommend authenticator for NHSmail users. e.g. GP surgery staff

  1. Navigate to Care Identity Management and login with your smartcard
  2. Click View your profile
  3. Check your contact details as the email address must be kept up to date to support login with the authenticator app.
  4. Click the Authenticators tab and Add Authenticator
  5. Select Microsoft Authenticator and Continue
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish adding NHS Care Identity to your app

Recommended: After setup: select logout on CIM, remove your smartcard and try to log back in with your new authenticator so you are familar with the process.
